TRANSCRIPTIONS
“Step Into the Light” (Opolopo) low synth line transcription
Here is a fast, angular synth line I transcribed and put into multiple keys and instruments. It’s obviously not idiomatic for most instruments, but it could be a challenging technical etude for an advanced player.
Concert pitch - original pitch (bass clef) - suitable for contrabass tuba
Concert pitch - up a major 2nd (bass clef) - suitable for contrabass tuba
Concert pitch - up a perfect 5th (bass clef) - suitable for bass trombone and F tuba
Concert pitch - 8va (bass and tenor clef) - suitable for bassoon, euphonium, cello, and double bass
Concert pitch - up a major 9th (bass and tenor clef) - suitable for bassoon, trombone with F attachment, euphonium, cello, and double bass
Treble clef to low F - suitable for all clarinets and lupophone
Treble clef to low C# - suitable for bass and contrabass clarinets
“Light Velocity Ver.II” (Gran Turismo 4) flute solo transcription
Here is a transcription of the flute solo from “Light Velocity Ver.II”, a track by Isamu Ohira that plays in the Gran Turismo 4 Arcade Mode menus. As I’ve spent so many hours playing GT4 (possibly my favorite game of all time), this solo and the track around it is burned into my memory.
Original pitch (treble clef) - suitable for flute and violin
High treble clef (down to written A3) - suitable for all clarinets, all saxophones with low A, heckelphone, and lead trumpet or mellophone
Middle treble clef (down to written F#3) - suitable for all clarinets, lupophone, B-flat trumpet, mellophone, baritone/euphonium T.C.
Low treble clef (down to written E3) - suitable for all clarinets, horn in F, euphonium T.C.
High bass clef (2 octaves below original) - suitable for bassoon, trombone with F attachment, euphonium, cello, double bass
Middle bass clef (2 octaves+P4 below original) - suitable for bass trombone and F tuba
Low bass clef (3 octaves below original) - suitable for tuba and cimbasso
“Every Moment” (Satoshi Bandoh) alto saxophone solo transcription
Here is a transcription of a wonderful alto saxophone solo recorded by Takahiro Miyazaki.
PATCH BANKS
If you’re familiar with the Yamaha DX7 and its free VST emulation called Dexed, you probably know that there is a massive library of DX7 sysex patches called the Dexed Cart available for free online. It is a monumental patch library, with literally thousands of patches collected from across the Web. And while that is a wonderful resource, about 99% of those patches are…not great, to put it nicely. There are also lots of duplicate patches, and in general it is a huge undertaking to try to wade into the Dexed Cart and find the good stuff.
Well, I’ve done the work for you! I went through the ENTIRE Dexed Cart and tried every single patch. I collected my favorites and organized them into 3 curated sysex banks, which can be loaded by any VST or hardware synthesizer that reads DX7 sysex. The banks are a mix of factory DX7 patches and third-party patches plundered from the Dexed Cart. They are sorted by patch type, and some patch names have been adjusted to match the others in the banks.
It is a complete, plug-and-play patch collection, and in my opinion it contains easily the best DX7 patches on the Internet. I have exclusively used these banks in Dexed ever since I made them, including on quite a few recording projects. They sound great, and demonstrate that the DX7 can still sound fresh and musical in the 21st century.
I call these banks the Finetales DX Collection, and they are yours to download for free here.
